GALLANT MAN won the 1957 Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont. An AP account from the day called Willie Shoemaker "a Texas boy from El Paso," Gallant Man a "little Irish-raised son of Migoli." When I met Gallant Man at Spendthrift Farm in 1984, 30, he'd curl his lip for a peppermint.

1993 Breeders' Cup Preview Day at Belmont culminated in a "furious stretch duel" in the Jockey Club Gold Cup. Miner's Mark (McCarron) held off Colonial Affair. Banner day for Shug McGaughey! w/ 6 wins, inc. 5 stakes - Dispute, Heavenly Prize, Strolling Along, Lure, Miner's Mark.

Another very memorable Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont came in 1996, when SKIP AWAY gamely held off odds-on choice Cigar by a head. Shane Sellers rode SKIP AWAY for trainer Sonny Hine. SKIP AWAY, 3, was winning his third Grade 1. He would add 7 more in his Hall of Fame career.
