Vex is an independent browser based on open-source components from Brave and Chromium. It is focused on privacy, simplicity, freedom from product bloat, and a modern way to organize browsing.
Project status: Vex is in pre-alpha development. There are no official builds or supported releases yet.
Linux is the first development and testing platform, with Ubuntu as the initial reference environment. Support for other desktop and mobile platforms is planned as the project matures.
- Maintain a shallow, disciplined fork of Brave.
- Reuse Brave and Chromium foundations whenever possible.
- Keep upstream parity and minimize long-term maintenance.
- Develop and stabilize one major feature at a time.
- Preserve Brave Shields, native ad blocking, extension compatibility, and security updates.
- Remove or disable product bloat and commercial integrations that are not part of Vex.
- Build an original Vex experience around tabs, folders, Split View, Quick View, and private sync.
The current milestone is Foundation:
- produce a clean upstream build on Ubuntu;
- document a reproducible development environment;
- establish the upstream synchronization process;
- add minimal Vex branding only after the clean build is verified.

Brand source assets are maintained separately and are not licensed under the MPL-2.0.
Bug reports, feature proposals, documentation improvements, and code contributions are welcome. Before starting a substantial code change, open or join an issue so the scope can be discussed and kept aligned with the incremental roadmap.

- Discussions for broader ideas, questions, and early product conversations;
- pull requests for focused, testable changes tied to an issue whenever practical.
Do not report security vulnerabilities in public issues or discussions. Use GitHub's private vulnerability reporting feature for this repository once enabled.
Vex code is licensed under the Mozilla Public License 2.0, except where another license is explicitly stated. Third-party components remain under their respective licenses.
The Vex name, logo, icons, and visual identity are proprietary assets and are not licensed under the MPL-2.0 unless explicitly stated otherwise.
